Why the public have had enough of experts and would rather listen to Gwyneth Paltrow

I am the expert and you must listen to me! Have I lost you? I don’t blame you. Communicating complex science is always going to be tricky. But most people wouldn’t claim to understand or have experience of astrophysics whereas everyone eats, so everyone can claim to have knowledge about nutrition. A quick glance at the #nutrition hashtag on Instagram reveals that the majority of the content comes from brands, influencers and celebrities and not from registered professionals with a background in nutrition. Water water everywhere but how much should I drink?

Do I really need 6 to 8 glasses of water a day? Or is it 2 litres? Can you really ‘drown’ if you drink too much? Do I have to drink only plain water? How will I know when I’m dehydrated? We can survive for weeks without food (not that I’d recommend it) but we’d die within a few days without water or at least something that provides us with water in one form or another. Alarming statistics like this abound in the media, suggesting that eating food X will increase your risk of cancer, stroke or dementia by what can seem like a huge percentage. Similar stats regarding how food Y (usually something green or purple like kale or blueberries) will decrease your risk of disease by an equally large percentage lead many to (erroneously) conclude that “food is medicine”. While it is true to say that the way we eat and generally live our lives can influence our risk of disease, the way nutrition is portrayed in the media is highly misleading. […]

If you’ve answered yes to any of these, you are not alone! I’ve worked with many parents to try to help them take the stress out of mealtimes when you have a picky eater in your midst. These are my top tips but above all, keep calm!   Start as you mean to go on   A great deal of research focuses on the months during which you first give your children food other than milk. This weaning period is over pretty quickly when you […]
